Ian Marychurch MSc BSc CEng MICE CGeol FGS CMgr Dip IoD

As Managing Director of CGL, Ian has over 30 years’ experience in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering for industrial, commercial and residential projects across the UK.  Ian is highly experienced in the interpretation of site investigation data, in the design of contaminated land remediation schemes and landfill gas protection measures.  He has been a member of the steering committee for the current British Standard BS 8485:2007 - Code of Practice for the Characterisation and Remediation from Ground Gas in Affected Developments.

Nick Langdon MSc BEng DIC CEng CEnv FICE FGS

Company Chairman and Director of CGL, Nick has nearly 35 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering. He has particular skills in the assessment and interpretation of site investigation data, slope analysis and stabilisation, and the design of foundations.  Nick has acted successfully as an Expert Witness on geotechnical issues in a number of cases in recent years.  Nick and Jo Strange (also from CGL) are joint-authors of the current Institution of Civil Engineers’ Guidance on contaminated land - Contaminated Land - investigation, assessment and remediation, Thomas Telford 2007 and contributors to the Manual of Geotechnical Engineering, Thomas Telford 2011.

Dan Matthews BEng CSci CEnv MIEnvSc MCMI

Dan is a Director based at our Godalming office with over 17 years’ experience as a project manager and geoenvironmental engineer specialising in the management of contaminated land, for both public and private sector clients.  He has strong and balanced skills in site investigation, risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land, and the management of soil and waste in ground engineering works that have included remediation of gas work sites, residential properties and fuel storage facilities.

Jo Strange MEng CEng CEnv FICE FWES MIEnvSc SiLC

Jo is the Technical Director at CGL and she is particularly skilled in the design, implementation and interpretation of geoenvironmental site investigations, remediation design and validation. She is a chartered civil engineer with nearly 30 years experience. Her expertise include quantitative risk assessment for soils, groundwater and ground gases, and the provision of specialist waste management advice with respect to contaminated soils and she is a SiLC, a registered environmental auditor with IEMA, and a registered ‘Qualified Person ‘ with CL:AIRE .  Jo and Nick Langdon are joint-authors of the current Institution of Civil Engineers’ Guidance on contaminated land - Contaminated Land - investigation, assessment and remediation, Thomas Telford 2007 and contributors to the Manual of Geotechnical Engineering, Thomas Telford 2011.

Richard Ball BSc MSc CEng MICE FGS 

Richard Ball is a Technical Director in CGL's Godalming office with experience in major infrastructure contracts comprising assessment of embankments and cuttings for railways and major highways, commercial and private developments, and civil engineering projects.  Richard has particular experience in geotechnical design including slope stability, mass gravity and embedded retaining walls, heave analysis and specialist ground modelling for deep basements, shallow foundations, settlements due to tunnelling and pile design.  He has also assisted in the production of detailed geotechnical design calculations and technical support for a number of litigation cases.

Richard Pennock MSc BEng(Hons) CEng MIMMM FGS ACSM

Richard Pennock is a Director based at our Harrogate office. He is a specialist in geoenvironmental engineering, having worked in consultancy and contracting on major commercial, industrial and residential projects here in the UK and internationally.  His experience covers the technical and managerial aspects of consultancy including due diligence appraisals, and the investigation and design of remediation schemes with particular expertise in quantitative gas risk assessments, rock slope stability appraisal and mitigation, mining risk assessment and foundation design. Ground investigations for new and refurbished electricity transmission towers across the UK for national clients is currently an area of expertise.  

Bryn Jones BSc (Hons) MSc CGeol EurGeol FGS

Bryn is the Regional Director of CGL Exeter with over twelve years’ experience in geotechnical engineering in the UK and Jamaica, on major civils infrastructure works in the Rail, Highways and commercial sectors and has experience working alongside the Environment Agency frameworks.  Bryn’s expertise includes earthworks design, emergency remediation and construction supervision, the design and supervision of geotechnical investigations, deep and shallow foundation design including embedded and gravity wall design, pile group and temporary works design. He has considerable experience in the production of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Reports and Civils Specifications for both the Highways Agency and Network Rail.

Heather Miles BSc (Hons) MRes CGeol FGS

Heather is the Principal Environmental Consultant at CGL’s Harrogate office.  She is involved in preparing desk study and site investigation proposals, strategies and quotations and the design, implementation, supervision and interpretation of geotechnical and geoenvironmental site investigations.  She has geoenvironmental and geotechnical consultancy experience in the supervision and project management of contaminated land and geotechnical investigations and remediation for commercial, industrial and residential projects. In addition, providing advice on environmental liabilities associated with the sale and purchase of properties and sites.

Mark Creighton CEng FICE

Mark is a Director based at our London office where he is responsible for developing the business in central London and in particular providing specialist advice on temporary works and excavation strategies for a variety of clients around the capital and elsewhere.   Mark has over 35 years’ experience in Building and Civil Engineering whilst working for Consultants and Contractors both in the UK and overseas over a diverse range of projects and sectors.  More recently as Chief Engineer at Galliford Try, Mark developed expertise in deep basements and asset protection coupling innovative construction techniques and pragmatic  cost effective temporary works solutions to CGL’s analytical skills in geotechnics.  

Alison Stafford-Willis Assoc CIPD  CMgr MCMI

Alison is an Associate Director, overseeing the Group Support Team, Properties and Facilities, and has worked at CGL for 15 years’.  She manages the HR function in order to identify HR priorities and recommend appropriate people management solutions which support business aims, in addition to providing support to line managers in aspects of people management. Alison is also responsible for overall planning, organising, and execution of all ITC functions and the support and maintenance of the existing infrastructure and applications.  She is also the Company Secretary for CGL.

Sua Daborn MICPA CMgr MCMI

Sua is our Financial Controller, she trained and qualified with Price Waterhouse Malaysia, she then completed her post qualification training with Ernst & Young in London.  Sua then spent 8 years in JP Morgan Investment Banking in the City as a Business Controller before leaving to raise her family.  She continued to work part time for a local Venture Capitalist and managed the finance of a number of offshore investment portfolio companies.  Prior to joining CGL, Sua was the financial controller for a security services company based in London and Aldershot.
