Commercial Sector
CGL has an established record of assisting clients in the design and successful construction of developments for commercial or public sector uses. We apply our full range of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering skills to provide complete, and often unique, solutions to meet our clients’ needs. We have worked directly and indirectly for major retailers as well as developers of hotels, distribution depots, hospitals, libraries, schools and colleges.
Our involvement ranges from initial due diligence and feasibility studies to identify liabilities and development constraints, liaison with regulators to achieve planning conditions, through to investigation, design and construction supervision. Sites for commercial development may have historic contamination or are sited on marginal land with issues that need to be addressed both for safe development and to maximise asset values. CGL’s experience in brownfield land development enables us to develop holistic ground solutions for our clients.
CGL’s investment in training and technology enables our team to achieve a detailed understanding of soil-structure interaction which has been used to design foundations for demanding projects including numerous high tower developments in central London.
CGL has a reputation for adding value or reducing risks in projects and this talent was recognised by an award from Ground Engineering magazine for Best UK Project with a Geotechnical Value Between £1-3 million. The project was for a new office building where we used an innovative approach to temporary and permanent works for a 20,000 cubic metre basement in chalk next to a fuel station and Network Rail main line.
CGL’s expertise in risk assessment and negotiation with regulators is often used to promote practical and environmentally robust solutions that provide confidence to parties with different commercial, technical and regulatory perspectives. Similarly, our understanding of ground engineering and our use of complex technical analysis, where appropriate, can often lead to developments providing greater returns on investment.
