The Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Pollution Advisory Group (YALPAG) has updated its guidance for development on land affected by contamination.

The guidance is adopted as best practice by 38 local authorities from the east midlands to the north east of England. Whilst not a legal document, YALPAG guidance is widely recognised as a useful tool by the local authorities as well as developers, consultants and contractors as it helps ensure a consistent approach to planning decisions and remediation strategies across the region.

The latest edition expands on the need to classify the risk from ground gas which previously only received a light touch with regard to radon and coal gas.

The March 2018 (v.9.2) edition of YALPAG guidance for Development on Land Affected by Contamination can be downloaded from https://www.york.gov.uk/downloads/file/3803/yalpag_planning_guidance_version_82
