Job Summary: We are seeking a dynamic and results driven professional to join our award-winning Ground Engineering consultancy as the business unit manager for our South Central region. With a proven ability to lead a team of consultancy staff, you will be responsible for overseeing the general operations within the region, driving performance and growth through proactive business development activities and delivery of a portfolio of projects across our key market sectors.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop the regional business plan to align with company strategy. Delivery of plan to meet annual revenue and EBITDA budget targets;
  • Track further financial and performance KPIs including sales / conversions, utilisation and project profitability, proactively addressing any variances;
  • Drive business development and pipeline generation within CGL’s key market sectors (residential, infrastructure, commercial, energy, waste) for the region and wider business. Work with the Commercial function to identify relevant growth sectors and clients, generating appropriate leads and proactively creating opportunities;
  • Keep informed of market trends and influences, communicating key information throughout the business unit;
  • Build and maintain pipeline forecast in line with budget, reforecasting monthly to account for changes to project delivery programmes and opportunity wins or losses;
  • Report monthly to Managing Director / Board on performance;
  • Develop / lead compelling bids and proposals to secure relevant projects, programmes and frameworks;
  • Serve as Project Director across a portfolio of ground engineering projects, providing technical and commercial leadership with ultimate review and sign off;
  • Plan and manage resources across project delivery, proposals / bids and business development activities, to maintain utilisation targets. Highlight resource constraints and profile recruitment requirements to close gaps;
  • Deliver professional succinct presentations to clients as part of key business development and project delivery activities;
  • Prepare business cases to support the release of funds for capital investment on business unit assets;
  • Proactively build the CGL brand and maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers and other stakeholders;
  • Lead a team of geotechnical and geo-environmental engineers with a range of experience and capability. Line management of senior staff, defining key objectives and development plans. Undertake performance reviews and annual appraisals, checking in regularly via 1:1s. Foster a positive team dynamic and social interactivity;
  • Act as authority and escalation point for critical matters in bids and project delivery, including risk and change management, and contract negotiation;
  • Engage with and support other Regional Managers, sharing updates and best practice across the business. Collaborate on opportunities and projects to share resources, protecting revenue generation and mitigating risks of resource under-utilisation;
  • Ensure that Health & Safety is at the heart of everything, identifying and recording near misses and incidents, and liaising with SHEQ management to drive appropriate actions to address these. Review and approve RAMS for site works;
  • Create a culture of excellence in delivery, seeking opportunities for continuous improvement of standards and governance procedures, mitigating technical, commercial and H&S risks;

Attributes and Experience

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Ownership and management of operational budgets, with strong financial acumen to fully forecast and assess performance from multiple perspectives, and ability to respond proactively to address areas of under-performance;
  • Proven track record in leading large teams in a similar consultancy setting, managing multi-disciplinary resources with a range of experience levels to deliver portfolios of projects and programmes;
  • Experienced Project Director with familiarity with engineering project management tools and methodologies, including revenue recognition and Earned Value Analysis (EVA). Accountability for project delivery risks and issues (financial, programme or H&S) requiring escalation;
  • Demonstrable experience in business development and Client relationship management. Successful in developing and approving winning bids and proposals to drive work intake;
  • High technical proficiency and experience of approving key deliverables in at least one of CGL’s core disciplines (Geotechnical, Geoenvironmental, Geostructural). Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards in the ground engineering industry;
  • Strong understanding and experience of the ground engineering industry and relevant market sector dynamics;
  • Excellent communicator, able to connect with multiple stakeholders across various locations, and at all levels. Experienced in articulating complex problems and solutions to the business’ Senior Leadership Team;
  • Highly competent in negotiation and delivery of multiple forms of contract, including the NEC4 suite. Skilled in effective management of risk and change;.
  • Experienced in line management and supervision of multi-disciplinary teams, including annual appraisals, training and development, succession planning and pastoral care. Inspire and motivate teams, creating a culture and environment of positivity and inclusivity;
  • Strategic thinker with a results-driven approach. Naturally adept problem solver with agility to respond to emerging issues and develop appropriate but cost-effective solutions;
  • Drive to achieve excellent results, personal development and continuous improvement in the business’ processes;
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field; advanced degree and chartership through a recognised relevant body preferred;
  • Must possess a full UK Driving License, with ability and willingness to travel to other CGL / Client offices and work sites.
