Since our formation as Card Geotechnics Ltd in 1994, CGL has set new standards for our industry, providing sound engineering-based advice and pragmatic solutions for ground related problems.
At CGL, we offer the full range of geotechnical and geoenvironmental consultancy services so we can manage projects in their entirety for our clients. We offer a one-stop shop for the smallest to the largest projects, from drilling the first borehole through delivery of interpretative reports to the completion of remedial design works.
We work to a clear Mission, Vision and set of Values which are built around exemplary client service plus supporting and developing our staff whilst recognising our responsibilities to the world we live in.
Our people are specialists in their chosen areas and are drawn from engineering, geological and environmental backgrounds. They provide a holistic approach to construction problems that delivers the cost-effective solutions for which we are known. We are proud that our senior staff are heavily involved in delivering the technical excellence our clients have come to expect of us. Our engineers are actively involved in developing the industry and they are authors of many technical papers on geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering in the UK as well as international journals. They are often invited to speak at conferences and are continuously updating their skills.
“Great ambassadors for the profession.”

One of CGL’s proudest boasts is that we still work with clients who first engaged us when our business began in 1994. Our philosophy has always been to look at what we do from a client’s perspective and as a growing business, we understand the importance on the reliability of delivery and certainty of advice.
CGL is a distinctive employer within the construction industry as 44% of our staff are female, which closely reflects the gender profile of the entire UK workforce and is in stark contrast to the construction industry average of less than 10% women employees. CGL is recognised for its achievements as an inclusive employer and our latest initiative was to publish The Female Face of Civil Engineering in 2016 to encourage more girls in secondary schools to consider a career in the industry.
CGL is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Group (DiLG) with leaders from organisations across the STEM spectrum. CGL’s experience is included in the DLG Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit as a Case Study for flexible working, transparent career progression, sharing good practice, using role models and supporting retention and development. CGL is also the only SME and one of the first employers to join the WISE Ten Steps initiative.
We are committed to the principles of Investors in People and we have held the Gold Standard IIP certification since 2014. Only 17% of employers with IIP certification achieve the Gold Standard.
